For the second year in a row, Citizen Relations has released its Citizen Connections Report, the survey revealed a number of surprising consumer insights related to 'third places' (i.e. spaces where people come together outside of their home, work or school) and the power it has to bridge social connection gaps across generations:
- 83% of respondents have at least one third place but 74% flagged there there's something missing from this place
- 65% of women want third places to escape responsibility - it's men who crave more belonging and a desire to meet new people in a third place
- Younger generations value third places the most; 85% of Gen Z and Millennials would give up social media, eating out, sex and more to save their third places

The report focuses on the growing importance of "third places" in fostering social connection amidst a global "connection deficit," particularly as traditional workplaces evolve and younger generations seek meaningful IRL interactions.
Key Findings:
- Connection Deficit Persists: Following their 2023 report, Citizen Relations confirms the ongoing struggle with loneliness and lack of connection, with over half of respondents feeling less connected than a year ago.
- The Rise of the Third Place: Defined as physical spaces outside of home and work where people gather and connect, third places are seen as vital for combating loneliness and fostering community. Examples include parks, cafes, libraries, and gyms.
- Shifting Workplace Dynamics: With the rise of remote work, traditional offices are losing their role as "second places," emphasizing the need for alternative spaces for social interaction.
- Third Place Gaps: Many traditional third places are disappearing, and those that remain often lack the elements desired by today's consumers.
- Generational Divide: Younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, place a high value on third places and are willing to make sacrifices to maintain them.

Important Ideas & Facts:
- Connection Deficit Drivers: The report identifies shrinking social circles, mental well-being challenges, and difficulty balancing online/offline connection as key contributors to the deficit.
- Third Place Motivations: While both men and women seek connection in third places, motivations differ. Women prioritize stress relief and escape from responsibility, while men focus on connecting with new people.
- Desired Third Place Elements: Respondents highlighted the lack of "third place community building," convenient hours, and basic amenities like bathroom access.
- Brand Opportunity: Brands can bridge the connection gap by creating or partnering with third places that cater to specific needs and interests, prioritizing community building over immediate sales.
