For this edition of 2024 Public Relations Predictions, we reached out to leaders at communication agencies across Canada to discuss topics such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Influencers.  First up is Emma Cussons, Creative Director & Partner of 1Milk2Sugars.

AI has become the current buzzword - how does AI fit into 2024?

Emma - Embracing AI-driven innovation, our agency has seamlessly automated routine tasks, truly transforming our day to day. While we've
eagerly adopted AI across various functions, our commitment to storytelling and creative excellence remains unwavering. As
pioneers, we also acknowledge the unmatched value of human creativity and consumer understanding- something we refuse to
compromise on.

What we are most focused on is the opportunity for our clients. AI is no longer just a buzzword. In an era where AI dominates search, a forward-thinking online PR strategy is paramount. With tools like ChatGPT being used for search, prioritizing quality PR results is now imperative. Brands investing in their online presence and proactive digital PR efforts gain a distinct advantage in the AI-generated search arena.

AI-driven searches often revolve around user queries. Crafting PR content that addresses industry or brand-specific questions establishes brand authority, elevating both search rankings and perceived expertise.

AI algorithms also value authentic user-generated content (UGC), shaping search rankings. Brands excelling in positive earned PR, for example from product sampling to media, influencers and consumers, enjoy heightened visibility. Striving for accolades like “top list” or “best of” coverage positions brands as leaders in the AI-driven PR landscape.

It’s also important to understand that online PR now seamlessly integrates with social media, where AI algorithms dictate content visibility. Positive engagement and a robust social media presence propel brands to the forefront on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube.

Many social networks have been testing paid options in other countries, will this become widely adopted across the board in 2024?

Emma - Having closely monitored industry trends and data, it's evident that the predominant revenue stream for top social media platforms continues to be advertising, and this emphasis is likely to persist for the foreseeable future. Even major platforms like YouTube and Spotify, who’ve adopted a paid model for years now, have not transitioned to a completely ad-free model.

However, the noteworthy shift toward ad-free social media reflects a very crucial consumer insight. There's a clear indication of user fatigue with intrusive ads, heightened concerns about data privacy, and an expressed desire for more authentic, user-centric experiences. Brands can distinguish themselves by recognizing this evolving consumer demand and adapting their strategies accordingly. This involves integrating more earned PR and authentic-driven content, such as user-generated content (UGC) and influencer marketing.

Additionally, it underscores the increasing value of community building. Brands that engage with consumers, offering experiences that empower them and align with their preferences, are better positioned for success. This includes adopting gamified and personalized loyalty programs, investing in experiential marketing (where consumers feel in control of their experience), and prioritizing online community management- something several brands have completely forgotten about.

For brands heavily reliant on paid strategies, it's a pivotal moment to reassess the sustainability of their efforts. Understanding the evolving landscape and aligning marketing efforts with consumer preferences will be essential for long-term success in this changing environment.

What role will influencers play in 2024?

Emma - As we navigate an era marked by ad-free environments and the pervasive influence of AI, the trajectory of influencer marketing is undergoing a profound shift, attaining even greater significance. Looking to 2024, our agency is intensifying its commitment, dedicating expertise and resources to empower brands in harnessing the dynamic force of influence from two perspectives:

  1. Our track record demonstrates that influencer collaborations organically yield audience-centric content, ranging from reviews and unboxings to lifestyle narratives. In this discerning age of consumers, where authenticity reigns supreme, user-generated "style" content emerges as a paramount asset for brands in the new year. It seamlessly mirrors authentic user experiences, resonating powerfully in a landscape saturated with ad-savvy consumers.
  2. In a visionary approach, we're extending this paradigm to employer branding in 2024, advocating for clients to view employees as influencers too. This strategic shift acknowledges their pivotal role as brand ambassadors. We're helping clients recognize that Gen-Z is the fastest growing demographic on Linkedin and understand that consumers invest in a brand, not just the product. By considering internal comms in your 360 strategy and empowering employees to authentically represent the brand, organizations can harness the collective reach and credibility of their workforce, amplifying brand visibility, fortifying reputation, and fostering heightened engagement. We believe this holistic approach to influence is poised to shape the future of brand marketing strategies, especially needed when #HrTok is at an ultimate high.

What does Media Relations look like in 2024?

Emma - In 2024, media relations stands out as a pivotal strategy for future-proofing your brand, perhaps, dare I say, the most crucial tactic to lean into.

However, it's essential to acknowledge that media relations itself has a PR problem. You see, if you were to survey individuals on the street about what media relations entails, you'd likely receive varying responses or outdated tactics. The reality is that media relations has undergone a profound transformation, demanding that PR professionals effectively communicate its new essence and potential.

Traditionally, media relations has always aimed to inform and educate the public about a brand's identity and values. However, in today's world, much of this communication occurs online, emphasizing the need for a digital-first approach to PR. As we advance into 2024, our strategy for media relations will prioritize this digital-first methodology, incorporating targeted keywords and messaging tailored for algorithms and ai searches. Something journalists and digital media are also keen to explore as they try to get more visibility on their content.

While some lifestyle print media has experienced sustained growth in readership, particularly in the current year, it remains just one facet of brand credibility. Our approach recognizes the enduring importance of print but places greater emphasis on the online realm, including digital media, podcasters, influencers, and social media platforms, which are poised to be the focal points for our clients in the coming year. This strategic alignment ensures that our media relations are directed toward the channels most relevant to our clients target audiences in 2024.

What are you excited about as we move into 2024?

Emma - In this exciting era of AI, our agency has embraced this change as a positive boost for the PR industry as a whole. The key for marketers is to understand the potential of this technology for PR – positioning your clients at the forefront of digital visibility. This is what’s helping propel our agency growth alongside our clients, and we look forward to exploring its boundless opportunities in 2024!
