To celebrate International Women's Day and Women's History Month, PR In Canada is taking a moment to learn from some of the women across Canada that are leading the way for more change. Women who have made a difference in their organizations, continue to have a positive impact on those around them while creating additional opportunities for women to excel today, and tomorrow.
As part of our series, we talk with Suzanne Cohon, Principal, ASC Public Relations.
It is Women's History Month, what does it mean to you?
Suzanne - For me, Women’s History Month is a reminder that we are a sisterhood and have a collective responsibility to champion each other, advocate for each other and continue to empower and create opportunities for each other. This month is particularly important when it comes to the next generation. We need to educate young women about what the world looked like just 25 years ago and how much we’ve worked to create positive change and build our community. The buck doesn’t stop here – we’re constantly passing the torch.
What are you most excited about when it comes to women in the workplace?
Suzanne - At ASC I have had the privilege of watching my team grow and flourish into extraordinary communications executives; it is a highlight of my career. I am also extremely proud of our client roster. At ASC we represent exceptional businesses and brands with women at the helm – they are the founders, CEO’s, and champions of change. For me, it doesn’t get much better than that.
What are you disappointed about when it comes to women in the workplace?
Suzanne - What I find disappointing is that there is still such blatant public misogyny. Last week, I caught a snippet of a reality program (broadcast on major network) in which a Fortune 400 executive (who was holding the purse strings – I might add) asked a female entrepreneur if she had to choose between a meeting with a potential investor or attend her kid’s birthday party – what would she choose? Come on. Really?
What are 3 things women in the marcom (marketing, communications) industry need to do more?
Suzanne - Speak up. Just because a client thinks their idea is the best – doesn’t necessarily mean it is. We’re experts in the space – not “Yes Men”. Take time to mentor junior team members. We live in such a fast-paced world it’s easy to forget that this is a critical component of creating a successful and collaborative work environment. Remind themselves that “saying it” and actually “doing it” are two completely different things.
The workplace and the world have changed so much in the last 5 years - what does it take to be a female leader today?
Suzanne - An open and curious mind. When I scroll through various social media channels – I’m blown away by what content creators find compelling and how they share it with their followers in a unique voice. This fuels me to learn more and understand how I can communicate on behalf of our clients to this new generation of consumers.
