What made me want to start my own company?
A lousy boss.
My typical work day:
There is nothing typical about my work which is why I love my job. Every day is different and every day I am learning and teaching. How lucky is that?
How do I balance family-work?
I make lists; keep a very organized calendar; I let go of guilt; learned how to say ‘no’ and I give family and work 100% but not at the same time. There is space to love both and respect both.
I think there has to be separate time devoted to family, work, friends and yourself. Sometimes one of those areas is going to need more than the rest and that’s okay. That’s part of the balance. There are some days when I feel like I’m getting burnt out, or I just need some quiet, so I might work from home, or take a short trip to break up the routine and pace. Some weekends in the winter, we just stay home all day and listen to music and watch movies and nap. It’s awesome.
9 to 5 is long gone – here’s what works for me:
As a business owner since 2000, there has never been 9 to 5 for me – and it is exactly why I chose this path. Do what you love and hopefully, if you’re lucky, you stop looking at the clock and just enjoy the ride.
