After a trial that was not unexpected, the lawsuit accused Meta of intentionally designing platforms such as Instagram and Facebook to addict children, despite being aware of the potential harm these platforms could cause to young users. The states also alleged that Meta knowingly collected data from children without parental consent, violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims from 29 U.S. states over children’s safety, which is a drop in the bucket for the world's largest social media company.  This is a US-only settlement, meaning there is nothing legally obligating Meta in Canada to comply.
