Corus EntertainmentLast week, Rogers announced a major deal with NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery that will result in several shows being taken away from its competitor, Corus. This includes popular brands such as HGTV and The Food Network. The news resulted in about thirty people in Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario were laid off from their positions at Global News. The parent company attributed this to “the current economic and regulatory reality” faced by media organizations.

Twenty-five positions were cut in Western Canada, CBC News has confirmed. Thirteen were in Calgary, eight were in Edmonton, one was in Vancouver and three were in Lethbridge.
Three reporters were dismissed in Global’s office in Ottawa, while Unifor reported that seven were let go in Toronto.
An internal memo distributed to Global News employees said the changes are “designed to prepare our news division for more economic pressure, as the industry continues to evolve, as larger international tech giants offer content and advertising platforms directly to Canadians, and monopolize the Canadian advertising landscape.”

In April, Corus CEO Doug Murphy stated that the company is still cutting costs after layoffs and a programming reduction initiative started last year.

Today, Corus announced the retirement of Doug Murphy as president and CEO, who will be succeeded by two experienced company insiders.  Doug joined Corus in 2003 as Executive Vice-President, Business DXevelopment, and held successively more senior positions until he was appointed as president and chief executive in 2015.

Troy Reeb and John Gossling have been appointed as co-chief executives, effective immediately.
