This Is How I Get It DONE
Welcome Season 5 of our series This Is How I Get It DONE, where we take a moment to interview members of the PR In Canada & Profectio community members to find out more about the person behind the desk, how they got their start, their current role (and everything in between). For our seventh episode of Season 5 we talked to Claudia Martin, Vice President & Founder of Agence FDM [TCO].
I am a VP and a partner at Agence FDM meaning, I am spearheading all campaigns, solving issues, and ensuring that each campaign is as strong as it can be!
Tell us a little about your background and how you got to where you are today.
Before partnering at FDM, I worked in PR agencies and for public organizations, as a communication consultant and a spokesperson. I also worked at an International Engineering Firm as part of the Global Communication Team, so I might not have a typical background, but it certainly gave me wide expertise and empowered me with experience.
What made you decide to launch your own agency?
I joined FDM in 2015 and officially became a partner in 2017. When I started working with Agence FDM’s founder, Franceska, we had four employees. But, now we have a team of 23 employees! I never had the “entrepreneurship” calling in my career before, but I guess you can also grow into this position!
One word to describe your work style AND what you do:
Just do it! I love involving and inspiring my team to accomplish great things and creating new opportunities for brands to stand out!
What is a typical workday like for you?
Reading the news, scrolling over my IG feed, and looking at emails! People know I always have my phone on me, it’s almost glued to my hand! I generally have a few calls, internal or with clients, to discuss the day’s plan and any upcoming issues or opportunities. I oversee all operations, so I’m always available for the team to guide them through questions/issues they may have. I’m there for support on a daily basis. We discuss new ideas, concepts, and make sure our clients are well represented and that the campaign objectives are met! If it’s not the case, we review our strategies and make sure we provide clients with the best possible results!
What was a moment in your career that really helped define how you work today?
One of my previous superior made me understand that details do matter and it’s something I’ve always kept in mind and apply in every project we take on.
How do you balance family-work?
I’m the worst! I always have my cellphone on me and answer my emails or messages compulsively! I’m unable to see a notification number next to the NEW EMAIL icon! Working from home also made it more challenging to up offline once the day is over, but I try to take more time for myself.
9-5 is LONG gone, what is one shortcut or life hack that works for you?
First, I love starting my day with two coffees and take the time to look at what my day will look like. Every day is different, and that is what I like about it! Talking and connecting with the team and all clients is what I like the most about my job! But sometimes, I need time to think, write and strategize. I found that blocking a few hours in my schedule ensures me time to work on what needs to be absolutely done!
