NKPR has been selected to work with Engineers Without Borders Canada (EWB) to promote a new youth- targeted political action campaign called #PoliticsAside. The issue of increasing Canada’s contribution to international global aid, and its effectiveness, is one that resonates with young voters. EWB aims to engage this group to encourage their federally nominated candidates to establish cross-party cooperation in supporting worldwide poverty reduction.
As part of the campaign launch, EWB has released the results of a national poll demonstrating that 94% of Canadians say it is important to improve health, education and economic opportunity for the world’s most vulnerable. Additionally, 62% of Canadians agree that Canada should be one of the leading countries providing international development, while 76% agree that we have a moral obligation to expand health, education and economic opportunity to the world’s poorest. The full results of the poll are published in EWB’s report, Canadian Perspectives on International Development.
The #PoliticsAside campaign is designed to harness this collective will and communicate it to both federally nominated candidates and leaders on Parliament Hill. By answering a few simple questions on the campaign’s website, Canadians can act on their desire to see politicians band together in ensuring Canada is a leader in international development. As the campaign continues, Canadians will be encouraged to take further actions, including calling and meeting their candidates and attending events. The online initiative has a goal to see 350,000 Canadians take action in advance of the 2015 federal election.
