The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) launched a new campaign called “Choose Adoption” aimed at increasing the level of animal adoption in the country.
“By tying a teal Choose Adoption ribbon on your dog’s leash or collar you are identifying them as an adopted animal and raising awareness about the value of giving a home to a shelter dog,” says Barbara Cartwright, CEO of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies. “Right now there are thousands of wonderful animals in shelters and rescues waiting for the right person to adopt them.”
According to their work, CFHS has discovered that many dogs sold in Canada come from puppy mills, which are horrible breeding operations where dogs are kept in cramped, filthy cages their whole lives, deprived of adequate food, attention, and veterinary care, and forced to give birth to litter after litter of puppies.
“Adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group helps save lives, and guarantees you aren’t unknowingly buying from a cruel puppy mill,” says Ms. Cartwright. “I’d love to go to my neighbourhood dog park soon and see every dog wearing a teal Choose Adoption ribbon.”
A dog may end up in a shelter for many reasons including an unexpected move, allergies or issues with a landlord; most have nothing to do with the dog itself.
Choose Adoption ribbons can be purchased directly from the Federation in packages of 10 or more or visiting www.findingfido.ca.
