Jeff Bezos Buys The Washington Post, Could A Canadian Newspaper Be Next?

By now you have heard that Amazon’s Founder Jeff Bezos bought The Washington Post for $250 million earlier this week. This is shocking news, and has raised many questions.  One thing we’ve wondered around the office is, would he buy a Canadian newspaper next?  It is no secret that certain Canadian newspapers are hurting, and Amazon does already have a footprint in Canada – so it might not be that far off of an idea.

So with that in mind we thought we would take a look at 3 possible reasons why he might want to buy a Canadian newspaper:

  1. Deep integration into Kindle – As print sales continue to suffer due to consumers opting for digital content, the Kindle is a natural place where newspaper content can be delivered in real-time
  2. Instant distribution network – with the growing tablet market, Amazon has been able to sell well over 2 million Kindle devices in Canada so far and this gives Bezos an instant network for any newspaper’s content
  3. Save journalism save jobs – Sun Media shut down 11 newspapers and cut 360 jobs last month, deep cuts like that do not typically happen in digital publishing
