Looking to Score with fans

September 12, 2008

Sports channel The Score has a new HD studio on King Street West and to celebrate its high-tech achievement, it’s doing things the low-tech way. It’s throwing an old-fashioned street party at the corner of King and Peter Street on a crisp fall afternoon this September 22.

The Score really wants to drum up excitement for this event and they’ve gone all-out: celebrity appearances by Jermaine O’Neal and Wendel Clark, beer garden, the NBA Championship trophy and a free concert from acts like Kardinal Offishall and The Trews. What they have to do with sports, I don’t know, but it makes for a good party.

It’s certainly keeps it clear that The Score is about sports, first and foremost: big parties, beer and celebration go hand-in-hand with sports. That’s the primary message here: the HD is nice, but the better viewing experience is much more exciting. The average sports fan, I think, doesn’t care how HD works, only that it makes all those hockey fights even better.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter how advanced the technology is on a TV network-if it can’t connect with its audience, it’s sunk. The Score must know this, because their message is that it’s all about the fans.

The Score is going for a high profile, all around-the studio space itself is CITY-TV like. Right on the corner of King and Peter, the half-subterranean studio hard to miss. It’s not easy to tell with the windows still covered from renovations, but it appears that the action in the studio will be visible from the street.

We’ll see if their street party helps The Score reach its goal. Now, if Toronto could just get an actual sports championship to celebrate….
