Waste Reduction Week Hopes Oscar The Grouch Teaches Canadians How To Conserve

He’s not a Canadian, but he does have universal appeal to Canadian adults and children alike-surly, trash-loving and a head of oddly unnatural hair.

No, not Stephen Harper.  Oscar the Grouch  has been signed on at the official spokesperson-er, Muppet-for Canada’s Waste Reduction Week.

The iconic Sesame Street character will appear in a series of ads for Waste Reduction Week, which runs from October 19 to 25.  He’ll educate Canadians on the sobering facts of how much waste each person creates, and ways to reduce, reuse and recycle their trash.

The “endorsement deal” should be effective-Oscar is appealing to kids and has the nostalgia factor to connect with adults, and having a little fun with a serious matter is a good way to get people to pay attention.

I thought Oscar liked trash, though.  Why would he want us to reduce our waste? Unless he likes recyclables  much more than he does styrofoam containers, of course.  I’m a bit out of the Sesame Street loop.

And, of course, since trash never goes away,  I suppose Oscar already has plenty and doesn’t need us to make any more.  Which is exactly Waste Reduction Week’s point.
