Toronto owns the Nuit again

Toronto’s annual all-night festival of the arts is back this Saturday night-the Scotiabank-sponsored Nuit Blanche.

I’ve always liked the concept of Nuit Blanche-it’s not just exposure for artists from around the world, it’s a fantastic promotional tool for Toronto itself.

It shows that Toronto is avant-garde, has a strong sense of community, and most importantly, that the city and its citizens can let their hair down once a year and spread their intellectual wings.

It’s unfortunate, then, that it can’t receive greater financial support from the city itself. As a public relations tool, Nuit Blanche is a great return on investment. I know many people think the event’s artistic allure is tainted by its sponsorship by Scotiabank (a PR coup for the bank, but that’s another story). I’m personally grateful because sponsor dollars keep the event alive, but support from the city would be much nicer to see.

Nuit Blanche begins precisely at sundown-6:52pm- and runs until the wee hours of Saturday morning. Bring an open mind-and your coffee.
