Metro Makes News Mobile Friendly With iPhone And Blackberry App

metro_iphoneWe live in a fast paced world where news is now a 24 hour business, and many consumers want that news immediately.  I recall my Blackberry going off as the news of Michael Jackson’s passing broke on TMZ.com and friends we giving me updates as to what was happening.  Canada’s Metro, which is the nation’s #1 free daily newspaper has recognized the opportunity to deliver the news to its readers where ever they are and has launch new applications for mobile devices.  Metro has announced they will be launching a Apple’s iPhone application within the next week powered by Toronto-based Spreed.  They are also working with Viigo to launch a RIMS’s Blackberry application and in the next few months a French version will be made available.  Each application will offer news, entertainment, and sports, and consumers can also comment on stories, a mobile version of the Metro site has also been created at m.metronews.ca.

The company is also offering a mobile contest where readers who scan a 2-D barcode with their smartphones (after downloading the free Scan Life
kicked off through a co-promotion with Guinness, offering readers who scan a code a chance to win 1 of 7-trips to Dublin, Ireland where winners will celebrate the 250th anniversary with 1200 people from around the world.
